DP Chairman Sali Berisha has returned to attacks on his former collaborator and former Minister of Justice, Ilir Rusmali, now an advisor to President Bajram Begaj.
Speaking at a press conference, Berisha said he dismissed Rusmal in 2006 after his brother's involvement in a corruption affair over a tender in the Prisons Directorate.
Berisha's statement:
Ilir Rusmali was dismissed by Sali Berisha for corruption.
The event was that the director general of prisons, Dashamir Maçi, had opened a tender.
The minister's brother goes to the director and asks for the tender.
They weren't Edi Rama's standards, nor Lubia's, they were Sali Berisha's standards.
He says, go away now and don't show up here because you have no business, you're the minister's brother, you can't come here for the tender.
The minister's brother threatens the director general that he will suffer this and that.
Wisely he records it. Wisely Dashamir Maçi recorded the threat and brought it to my office.
Ilir Rusmali, instead of criticizing his brother and taking a stand against his brother, in violation of the Constitution and the law, dismisses the director general of prisons, at a time when it was not his nomenclature, it was the prime minister's or the council of ministers'. The ministry only had the proposal.
I tell him that I had to go out, I'll deal with it as soon as I get back.
I come here, he had done the discharge.
If it was about standing up to corruption, the minister should have praised the director for the stance he took towards his brother, who told him no, you have nothing to do with the tender.
But the minister sided with his brother, which means he might have had vested interests, and fired the director.
And I fired the minister.
Absolutely. I told him, with what you've done, you need to leave.
He was about to leave, he went to the office and brought a resignation letter and that was it.
But this is the story.
Let's leave this story.
This, the person referred to as Edi Rama, do you know what he is like?
This is an advisor to the president, whom the law does not allow to perform any other duties, he goes and takes the position of chairman of the KAS, another payment as a servant of Edi Rama.
Here, this is the lawyer, this is the staff.
Yes, these are all the same.
That's why they find each other.
They must respect the Constitution, because Erion Veliaj's lawyers, as far as I know, have taken Bajram Begaj's decree to the Constitutional Court again. It is their right.
And of course, not every lawyer can become a Rusmala, a Bajram, or an Edi Rama, they must abide by the law.
The law requires that the court's decision be awaited.
That's all.
Rama commented yesterday on all the criticisms leveled at President Begaj in recent days after the decree of early elections in Tirana. He said that no one has the intellectual independence of the former Minister of Justice of the Democratic Party and at the same time the legal advisor to the president, Ilir Rusmal.
