Journalist and analyst Mero Baze says that the US has not lifted the "non grata" status of Sali Berisha.

According to him, he intends to travel to the US only for medical visits.

"The news that the State Department has lifted the "non grata" sanctions on Sali Berisha and his family is not true, but it is true that Sali Berisha's lawyers, in exchange for 6 million dollars, were able to use the clause that sanctioned persons can visit the US for meetings at the UN, for official meetings of special importance and for special medical visits.

Sali Berisha's lawyers have used the "reasoning" for a special medical examination. Sali Berisha has prepared a voluminous medical file, and has even invented a diagnosis to make it seem plausible that he needs to undergo a specialized medical examination in the US.

In a way it's not that they don't know he's lying, but it's a propaganda effort to create the idea that he was allowed to visit the US.

The US Embassy in Tirana declined to comment and referred us to the State Department, which is still reluctant to make official comments and will of course forever keep Sali Berisha and his family sanctioned for undermining democracy and major corruption on its official website.

The only thing that has happened is that it has been accepted that Berisha should be granted a medical visa for the US, and thus both LaCivita and his team of lawyers feel comfortable, and Berisha has the opportunity to appear as if he is allowed to go to the US.

"The sanctions are not lifted. I know this seems stubborn today, but every day you have the opportunity to check the State Department website and see for yourself," Baze writes.
