The elected candidate of the Municipality of Himara, Fredi Beleri, has reacted after the approval in the European Parliament of an amendment presented by Greece expressing concern about his arrest.
"I sincerely thank the MEPs of the European Parliament for supporting my efforts for democracy, the rule of law and human rights in Himara, Albania. Fredi Beleri", it is written on Beleri's page on social networks.

In the text approved by the European Parliament, it is stated that Beler is presumed innocent and as a result, he has been denied his basic rights.
"The European Parliament expresses its concern about the arrest of the new mayor of Himara, Fredi Beleri, on the eve of the local elections on May 14, who violated the presumption of innocence and prevented the elected mayor from taking office, as he remains in prison even today, underlines that this issue is related to the general respect for fundamental rights, the unresolved issue of the properties of the members of the Greek ethnic minority in the area of the municipality and the accusations of encroachment by the state", says the justification for the approval decision. of the amendment.
Beleri is not an unknown character to the public. Originally from Progonati, a mountain village between Gjirokastra and Tepelena, he has been accused of being part of the terrorist organization MAVI, which attacked and killed two Albanian soldiers in Peshkepi.
