The EU Ambassador to Albania, Silvio Gonzato , was present at the meeting between the government and food operators and delivered his speech regarding the safety and evolution that this sector will need to have, as a prerequisite for entering the EU market.

Gonzato: Food safety is not just a requirement, but a fundamental good and belongs to all citizens. It provides security to consumers and offers fair competition among operators. It also represents one of the most complex and transformative areas of reform.

Albania has now entered this final phase of negotiations and this is measured by systems that work, but also inspections that are effective and based on risk assessment. It is based on certified laboratories and food entities that meet EU standards. Entities need to be improved in line with EU standards. It is very important for the sector.

Authorities should use limited resources and base them on risk-based controls. This mostly includes milk and meat. Due to the low quality of raw milk, it is a prerequisite to be competitive in the EU market. Milk treatment is not optional, but an essential step towards the EU. It is one of those requirements that Albania must comply with.

For operators, this transformation presents major challenges. This standardization paves the way for the large EU export market. It requires adoption, stricter hygiene, improved traceability and staff treatment. This is important, but certainly difficult. You will need to be supported in the process. This should be seen as an investment in your future.

More investment is needed from the government, so that businesses learn categorization, so that there is more investment.
