Italian MEP Ilaria Salis called on the EU to follow developments in Albania more carefully.
In her speech, she said that the Albanian people have risen up against the government and the opposition, both equally incapable of protecting and representing the interests of the Albanian people.
Salis added that the Albanian people have sent the message that they are not for sale to oligarchs, speculators, Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, and all those who think that money can buy everything, land, nature, and even democracy.
"Thanks to the flamingo movement this week, Albania is showing its best side. It is showing all of Europe a model path to follow. Hundreds of thousands of people have been in the square for weeks against the government and the opposition, both incapable of representing and defending the interests of the people. Their message is simple and powerful, "Albania is not for sale."
It is not for sale to the oligarchs, the speculators. It is not for sale to Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner. It is not for sale to all those who think that money can buy everything, land, nature, even democracy. This movement is not just environmentalist. It is a battle for popular sovereignty and the right of a people to decide for their future, without the economic interests of the dominant classes driving the agenda.
"For this reason, Europe should follow more carefully what is happening in Albania because it is something important for the European Union. This is a lively, aware people and capable of mobilizing against predatory capitalism, against injustice, for the common good and for freedom," said Italian MEP Salis.
