The European Parliament will debate this Tuesday Albania's progress in the European Union membership process, while amendments have been filed in the report that will be put to the vote that include recent developments regarding the tourism projects in Sazan and Zvërnec, as well as the protests that have accompanied this issue.

The amendments were submitted by MEPs from the "Left" parliamentary group and aim to strengthen references to the environmental impact of strategic projects in Albania.

In one of the amendments, MEPs express concern about the Albanian government's agreement with the company Affinity Partners, linked to Jared Kushner, for the development of a luxury resort on the island of Sazan and in the Vjosa-Narta protected area.

The text also proposes support for the investigation launched by the Special Prosecution Office against Corruption and Organized Crime (SPAK) regarding this matter and calls for the guarantee of the right to peaceful protest.

"Expresses concern about the government's agreement with Jared Kushner's company and calls for support for the anti-corruption investigation currently led by SPAK in this context," the amendment states.

A second amendment directly refers to the protests taking place in Albania against the project, highlighting that the European Commission has warned the Albanian authorities about actions that could affect the path to membership in the European Union.

MEPs recall that compliance with European legislation on the protection of birds and natural habitats remains a fundamental condition for Albania's membership in the EU.

The debate in the European Parliament takes place just a day after Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos stated that the European Commission has received guarantees from the Albanian government that the project will undergo a full environmental impact assessment and that European standards will be respected.

"We have received guarantees from the Albanian government that a full environmental impact assessment will be carried out and that European environmental standards will be respected," Kos declared.

Prime Minister Edi Rama then reacted by emphasizing that the European Commission has been acquainted in detail with the entire administrative process related to the projects in Sazan and Zvërnec and that the Commissioner's statements reflect the facts presented by the Albanian authorities.

The vote on Albania's report is expected to take place on Wednesday at noon, while the result will show whether these amendments will receive the support of the majority of MEPs or will remain only political proposals of a parliamentary group.

Below are the main parts of the amendments submitted by the MEPs of the "Left" group, which will be subject to a vote together with the report on Albania:

Amendment 4 (paragraph 46)

Expresses concern about the Albanian government's agreement with Jared Kushner's Affinity Partners company for the development of a luxury tourist project in Sazan and the Vjosa-Narta protected area; calls for support for the anti-corruption investigation currently being conducted by SPAK in this context; demands that the right to protest peacefully be guaranteed and not hindered by private security companies, as happened during the clashes recorded at the end of May 2026.

Amendment 5 (new paragraph 46a)

Underlines the fact that the European Commission has warned Albania against actions that could affect its path to membership in the European Union, in the context of ongoing national protests over a large luxury tourism project that threatens a protected natural area home to flamingos, seals and turtle nesting habitats; supports the Commission's criticisms in this regard and recalls that approximation with European Union environmental legislation, including the Birds Directive and the Habitats Directive, is a condition for EU membership.
