Was Beller given permission? Greek media: Rama didn't do anything
Fredi Beleri / Edi Rama

Greek media continue to reflect today the news that Fredi Beleri will be in Strasbourg next Tuesday to attend the Plenary Session of the European Parliament and to officially assume his duties as MEP.

According to the Kathimerini newspaper, Beler will fly to Strasbourg on Monday morning, with an intermediate stop in Athens.

Kathimerini points out that albanian authorities, after multiple pressures, gave him a five-day leave, which he himself had requested, in order to go to Strasbourg and then return to prison to serve the remaining term of the sentence, which ends in October.

"Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama could not have done otherwise," Kathimerini writes. After his election to the European Parliament, the Beleri issue ceased to be a "bilateral" issue and if he were not allowed to attend the first session, an unnecessary front would open up, this time with Brussels."

In addition, the case of Italian human rights activist Ilara Salic, who was imprisoned in Hungary and elected in June to her Seat of the European Parliament, forcing Viktor Orban to release him, was a "fresh" and powerful precedent, and Rama would not want to face a barrage of criticism from the first session of the new European Parliament.

The newspaper Proto Thema also points out in today's article that Albania's decision to grant a five-day permit from Fier prison to the elected mayor of Himara did not come easily but was the product of Greek and European pressures.

Sources of the newspaper say there have been intensive processes from the Greek side both at the highest government level, but also by the heads of the Foreign Ministry, Georgios Gerapetritis and Alexandra Papadopoulou.

According to Protothema, efforts to get Freddie Beleri to get a five-day leave have intensified in recent weeks, with everything sealed at the NATO summit in Washington.

There was no meeting of Prime Minister Edi Rama at the summit, but both prime ministers have authorized their chiefs of diplomacy for negotiations. According to Greek media, the agreement was reached between The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Greece Giorgos Gerapetritis with His Albanian counterpart Igli Hassani.

Although the satisfaction in the prime ministerial office has been expressed, outside it there was nothing obvious because everything happened in the last 14 months, it has brought Greek-Albanian relations to a "low barometric pressure", writes Proto Thema. Both Kathimerini and Proto Thema point out that official Athens has eyes on Himara for the Municipal Elections on August 4.

The Himariots will have to choose between American exile Petro Gjikouria, originally from the village of Drimadhë, who was elected by minority representatives, and the candidate of the Socialist Party of Edi Rama, former member of parliament and minister, Greek minority from Dropulli, Vangel Tavo.

In the course of the conflicts brought by the Beleri case, any prediction regarding the outcome of the vote is considered unsafe – comments Kathimerini.
