The NFA has conducted more than 68,000 inspections in 8 months to guarantee food safety standards, of which more than 5,000 inspections were risk-based.

"Food safety is one of the areas where the European integration process requires us not only to approximate legislation, but above all to establish a system that actually functions according to European Union standards," said Salla.

In the Agriculture and Rural Development Committee, Minister Andis Salla also focused on the samples taken for analysis of imported animal products.

"In implementation of the residue monitoring plan for animal products imported from third countries, 44 samples were taken during 2026; 30 of them were products from Brazil, namely 22 samples of chicken meat and 8 samples of pork meat," the minister said.

The minister said that during this year, 2 cases of chicken meat imported from Brazil with residues of veterinary substances have been identified, one of the quantities, the minister says, was reported before the verification was closed.

"In two cases of chicken meat from Brazil during the period January-August, residues of veterinary substances were found. In one case, the quantity was blocked and isolated in the operator's refrigerated facilities; control data show that it had not been released on the market. The RASFF and INFOSAN systems were notified and the product was returned to the country of origin. In the other case, the product was marketed before the verification was completed; tracing and notification of customers were requested and the relevant administrative measures were taken. These two cases show why blocking before distribution and documenting each supply chain are crucial", said the minister.

Salla emphasized that despite the fact that the import of beef and poultry from this country has been banned so far, the import of pork is also being carefully evaluated.

"For imports from Brazil, from September 3, 2026, changes related to the European listing for beef and poultry meat have been implemented. For these categories, imports are not allowed under the new listing conditions, control points and importing entities have been notified. Implementation must be uniform, documented and accompanied by the controls that each load requires. Also, regarding the issue of pork, communications have been received with the Brazilian side regarding the review of trade relations. When an analysis shows non-conformity, or when a product poses a reasonable risk due to its expiration or condition, the actions we take are clear: blocking, verification of the lot and the distribution chain, withdrawal or return when necessary, consumer notification and destruction as appropriate," said Salla.

During the period January-September, the NFA received 34 notifications through the RASFF system, while Albania forwarded 16 notifications for cases identified by our controls.

At the Commission, the minister also stated that a national program for improving milk standards is expected to be ready within this year.

"During 2026, out of 904 establishments scheduled for assessment, 696 were assessed; 208 resulted closed, suspended, under reconstruction or deregistered. Of the assessed establishments, 19 were ranked in category I, 204 in category II, 453 in category III and 20 in category IV. This data gives us a concrete overview of the situation and allows us to tell each operator what they need to improve. The work we are doing now is to turn this assessment into concrete measures. We aim to prepare the National Program for the Improvement of Establishments of Animal Origin Products and Animal Feed by December 2026. It should be clear to each operator what they need to correct, within what deadline and how progress will be verified," said Salla.
