Following the United States, the World Health Organization said it had requested information from Russian authorities regarding media reports of a laboratory worker with pneumonia of undetermined cause.

The WHO also requested further information to clarify the cause of the severe pneumonia and the pathogen that prompted the public health measures, it said in a statement.

Russia's health watchdog said on Tuesday that no cases of plague had been detected among anyone who had come into contact with the lab worker at the Siberian plague institute who died last week.

Earlier, American media reported that the United States is increasing pressure on Russia over the death of a 28-year-old researcher at a Siberian laboratory studying pneumonic plague and the subsequent quarantine measures.

In an official statement, known as a démarche, the State Department urged Moscow to comply with international health reporting obligations, warning that its failure to disclose details of the young researcher's death violates international health obligations.

US President Donald Trump said he will speak "very soon" with Russian President Vladimir Putin about the suspected case of pneumonic plague that emerged in the Irkutsk region of Siberia.
