After the results were announced, the presidential candidate of the National Rally (RN), Marine Le Pen, described the result as a “historic victory.” She said that the creation of a parliamentary group of the RN in the Senate constitutes an important moment for the party.

Elections for the French Senate are held indirectly. Locally elected representatives vote for senators, and half of the upper house is renewed every three years. Senators are elected for a six-year term.

The RN first entered the Senate in 2014, when the party was called the National Front, winning two seats. In 2023, it secured three seats. Sunday's result marks the largest expansion of its presence in the institution.

According to the published results, nine RN candidates have been elected senators. The three senators elected in 2023 are joined by two representatives of Éric Ciotti's allied party, the Union of the Right for the Republic (UDR).

RN leader Jordan Bardella said the party's senators would form a parliamentary group with UDR representatives. Ciotti left the traditional right-wing party, the Republicans (LR), in 2024 after calling for an alliance with the far right.

Gérard Larcher, 77, who has led the upper house for more than a decade, is expected to remain at the helm of the Senate. The vote to elect the Senate president is expected to take place next week.

Early results show that the right, the center and the socialists are expected to continue to be the three main political forces in the Senate. Meanwhile, France Inflexible (LFI), a radical left force, secured a seat in the upper chamber for the first time.

The rise of the RN in the Senate comes at a crucial moment for French politics. Marine Le Pen is targeting the 2027 presidential election, which will take place after President Emmanuel Macron's term ends.

The RN is now the largest single party in the National Assembly, the lower house of the French Parliament. It emerged as the main force after the 2024 snap elections called by Macron, but failed to secure an absolute majority.

The new result in the Senate gives the RN a greater presence in French political institutions and creates the conditions for the formation of its parliamentary group in the upper chamber, in collaboration with its allies.
