Following the resignation of Aleksandar Vucic as President of Serbia, the Speaker of the Parliament, Ana Brnabic, has temporarily assumed presidential duties.

Vucic resigned on Sunday after more than nine years at the helm of state. He is expected to run for prime minister in parliamentary elections on October 25, 2026.

His resignation requires early presidential elections to be held by the end of the year. Until then, Brnabic will exercise the duties of acting president.

Brnabic is a close political ally of Vucic. She served as Minister of Public Administration, Prime Minister of Serbia from 2017 to 2024, and, since 2024, as Speaker of Parliament.

By temporarily assuming presidential duties, Brnabic becomes the first person in the history of Serbia to have held all three highest state positions: minister, prime minister, and speaker of the parliament, while now also exercising the functions of acting president.
