Noise for Artificial Intelligence, usage remains minimal

A survey found that while most people have heard of artificial intelligence generation tools, regular usage remains quite low. Since the launch of OpenAI's ChatGPT in November 2022, generative artificial intelligence has been a hot topic in tech discussions, gaining widespread coverage for its capabilities.

But despite the hype surrounding new artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, a recent survey reveals that few people regularly use AI tools like ChatGPT. The survey, conducted by the Reuters Institute and the University of Oxford, surveyed more than 12,000 individuals in six countries, including France, Denmark and the UK, to gauge attitudes towards the use of generative artificial intelligence models. Adoption of ChatGPT and Google Bard remains surprisingly low

Survey findings show that a minimal percentage of people use ChatGPT daily, while even fewer people use other generation tools such as Google Gemini and Microsoft Copilot.

Most respondents reported having heard of some popular generative AI tools. ChatGPT emerged as the most popular, with 61% of respondents from Denmark and 58% from the UK indicating they were aware of it.

However, similar tools like Google Gemini and Microsoft Copilot are less popular, with only about 15 to 25% of respondents being aware of them.

While a significant majority of people have heard of highly publicized AI tools, fewer report using them and regular use remains rare, the survey found. ChatGPT is the most used tool among respondents in six countries, being two or three times more widespread than other models such as Google's Gemini and Microsoft's Copilot. However, the frequency of use is not high.

In France and the UK, only 2% of respondents reported using ChatGPT daily, with even fewer using other AI tools. In the UK none of the respondents reported using Google Gemini every day.
