The star of "One Direction" passes away at the age of 31

The star of "One Direction", Liam Payne, dies at the age of 31, after falling from the hotel balcony.

According to Argentine police, Payne was found dead outside a hotel in Buenos Aires after the 31-year-old fell from a third-floor balcony.

Officers say they were initially responding to reports of "an aggressive male who may have been under the influence of drugs and alcohol."

Shortly after their arrival, they were told that a loud noise had been heard in the inner courtyard of the hotel, where they later discovered Payne's body.

The head of the city's emergency medical service told local media that Payne was taken to hospital, but he had suffered "very serious" injuries as a result of the fall.

An investigation has been launched. The UK Foreign Office has said it is in contact with the authorities in Argentina.

Some of music's biggest names have reacted, with British singer Olly Murs saying he was "devastated", while American musician Charlie Puth recalled Payne's kindness.

Fans also expressed shock and sadness - with some gathering outside the Casa Sur hotel where Payne was found dead to sing along.
