The best places to go in Europe in August, the first recommendation Albanian

Summer in Europe is great, but it's also the continent's busiest months for tourism, which means you'll be sharing your vacation with a lot of other people.

Lonely Planet gives some recommendations on where tourists can go in Europe to avoid the crowds and relax in the magical corners of the continent. Among the six recommended places to rest in August, the first is the Albanian Riviera.

Albanian Riviera

While no longer the "hidden gem" it was at the turn of the millennium when the beaches were empty and prices really affordable, Albania's gorgeous southern coast remains a delight for those seeking sun, sand and seafood.

Saranda is now a city of many festive activities, with its promenade lined with bars. For quieter resorts, head to the Himara coast, which is surrounded by some good beaches (go to Potam).

In August, you are guaranteed sun, warm waters and temperatures reaching up to 30°C; as expected, sunbeds and beach umbrellas are in high demand, but you can still find quiet sandy spots in places like Palasa, Borshi, the pebble beach at Bunec and the islands near Ksamil. Or you can go through the Llogora Pass to the Gulf of Vlora, where you will find more resorts and boat trips to the secluded beaches at the end of the Karaburun Peninsula. Besides the beach, you can visit the archeological site of Butrint, where Greek, Roman and Byzantine ruins, some dating back 2500 years, are piled up on a rocky hill.

Pelion Peninsula, Greece

Of course, you can spend time on the crowded beaches of a Greek island. But in hot August head to cool Pelion, there are a range of seaside resorts, mostly more secluded and quieter than elsewhere: try Horto or Milina on the sheltered west coast or the pleasant Horefto, Agios Ioannis and Damouharin by the beautiful beach Fakistra on the east coast.

The mountainous interior is filled with natural and cultural beauty. Here, the air is a few degrees cooler than on the coast, and in summer you can take the train from Ano Lechonia to Milies, which runs daily in July and August.

Minho, Portugal

Where do the Portuguese vacation in their country? Those who know it well enjoy vacations in the birthplace of the kingdom: the northern Minho region, a land of green hills, traditional culture and wonderful tastes. Minho is known for its vinho verde, "green wine," which is released only a few months after production. The cuisine is also delicious – Minho was declared the European Region of Gastronomy in 2016. There are many local specialties.

Central Austria

Enjoy relaxation in the midst of magnificent mountain scenery.

A dense cluster of saunas, treatment centers and thermal waters stretches across a wide swath of central Austria east and south of Salzburg, most with a high backdrop of Alpine peaks, meadows and valleys. The focus varies slightly from one country to another. In Bad Aussee, expect a healthy diet plus outdoor activities, in line with the concepts of Kneipp therapies.

Coast of Belgium

Enjoy the longest tramway in the world and enjoy delicious seafood.

Belgium may not be the obvious destination for a beach holiday. But with an almost uninterrupted stretch of 70 km (44 miles) of white sand bordering the North Sea, perhaps it should be – around the turn of the 20th century, it attracted fashionable holidaymakers to its resorts. Today, the Belgian coast is full of attractions – aquariums, parks, water sports – all accessible by Kusttram (Coastal Tram). This venerable tram line, established in 1885, is the longest in the world, stretching 67 km (42 miles) between De Panne in the west and Knokke-Heist in the east.
