The favorite food of Albanians / Beans, the secret of a long life, says science

Could beans be the secret to a long healthy life? Dan Buettner, a New York Times bestselling author, has been researching and reporting on the so-called "blue zones" for more than 20 years.

Blue areas refer to regions where people have lived for more than 100 years. 5 Blue Zones have been identified around the world: Sardinia in Italy, Okinawa in Japan, the Nicoya Peninsula, Icaria in Greece and Loma Linda in California.

During this longevity study, Buettner found that all five areas had one thing in common in their daily meals: legumes.

Scientists believe that a plant-based diet contributes to the longevity of people living in these areas.

And it makes sense, as legumes are very nutritious, they contain copper, iron, magnesium, potassium, folic acid, zinc and lysine, an amino acid necessary for human health. They are also full of protein and fiber.

"Fiber rewards you with a healthy gut microbe and less inflammation and better immune function," Buettner told CNN. Buettner estimates that only 5 to 10% of Americans get the fiber they need.

Different beans also have a different amount of nutrients. For example, dark red beans are rich in potassium, while chickpeas are a good source of magnesium. Likewise, some types of beans contain more fiber and protein than others.

As such, Buettner advises eating a variety of beans for an optimal nutritional profile. The soluble fiber in beans can help lower cholesterol and even help prevent type 2 diabetes by stabilizing blood sugar.

Studies have also found that eating beans four times a week was associated with a 22% lower risk of heart disease.

Beans are even healthier than meat and also affordable to buy.
