An 88-year-old war veteran who was forced to return to full-time work after losing his pension was deeply moved when he received a check for $1.77 million, donated by strangers and generous people from around the world.
Ed Bambas, from Brighton, Michigan, served in the U.S. Army and then worked for years at General Motors, expecting his pension to provide him with a comfortable life after he retired in 1999. But everything changed in 2009 when GM faced bankruptcy. As a result, about 20,000 employees of Delphi Corporation, a GM subsidiary, lost their insurance funds, and Bambas was left without his retirement income.
The situation worsened when his wife, Joan, became seriously ill. Without health insurance, Bambas was forced to sell his house to cover medical expenses. She passed away in 2018, leaving him emotionally broken and financially strapped. Lonely and needy, the veteran returned to full-time work to survive.

Bamba's story touched the hearts of millions, including Australian influencer Sam Weidenhofer, who, upon hearing his story, decided to take action. Weidenhofer met the 88-year-old at work, listened to him tell his story, and then donated $400 to him on the spot. He also started a GoFundMe, urging people to help the veteran so he could finally retire and live a life of dignity.
On December 6, in an emotional ceremony held at Foguth Financial Group in Brighton, Michigan, Weidenhofer handed Bamba a giant check for the amount raised: a whopping $1,770,000.
“With the support of everyone in this room and thousands of people online, we have achieved one of the largest individual funds in the history of GoFundMe,” Weidenhofer said, as the veteran broke down in tears. “It was like a dream… thank you,” Bambas managed to say, hugging the influencer.
