Ioannina is considered the happiest city in Greece and this is certainly no coincidence, writes Protothema.
The city welcomes you with a landscape dominated by the lake, and the moment you step foot in it you know you don't have to try to feel at home.
The city seems to have its own, relaxed rhythm, a rhythm that quickly puts you in the mood: warm people, neighborhoods that still retain their old character, and an atmosphere that combines life, art, and history in a unique way.

In this context, the municipality of Ioannina organized a journalistic mission, wanting to highlight the beauties of the area, but also the ambition for the city to become a major player in conference tourism, which is already at very high levels.
Why is it called the "15-minute city"?
Ioannina is, as the city municipality claims, citing research, the definition of a 15-minute city. And that’s because everything is close to you, you can be from one end to the other in just a few minutes: from the lake to the center, from the castle in Nea Zoi or to the university grounds – everything is “at your doorstep”.

The city allows you to live it without stress, without traffic pressure, without the feeling of rushing. It is a human city, made to be enjoyed.
It is no coincidence that it was declared the happiest city in Greece for 2025, according to the global Happy City Index.

And the greatest jewel of Ioannina is none other than Lake Pamvotida. With its small island standing proud in the middle and the waters reflecting the sky and the Castle, the lake seems to give the city its own breath.

Morning walks in the mist, afternoon bike rides, and the characteristic ducks approaching passersby create images that are hard to find anywhere else. It is the “diamond” of the people of Ioannina — and not without reason.

The island, although small, carries a great history. The Ali Pasha Museum revives the last act of the Ottoman feudal lord, writes Protothema.
Ioannina has a simple vitality: the market is always full, the cafes are almost never empty, and the taverns spread aromas that make even the most demanding traveler stop.

And it is no coincidence that Ioannina is considered one of the newest conference destinations in Greece, as it is also a destination chosen by large foreign companies.
Easy access, modern infrastructure, high-standard hotels, and quality hospitality make the city ideal for conferences and business meetings.

Ioannina was an Albanian city that was taken over by Greece after the fall of the Ottoman Empire.
