Heart attacks

Sudden heart failure is more likely to strike early in the morning, especially between 06:00 and 10:00, writes the Italian scientific journal Focus.

Doctors and researchers have known this for decades, but the reason for this "preference" of time remained unknown for a long time: among the various dangerous hypotheses until now was the one related to the change of position, from lying down to to the walking we all face at the end of sleep.

A new study from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, has traced a link between sudden cardiac death and our biological clock: it is the production of a special protein that regulates the functioning of ion channels, the pathways for the passage of ions through cell membrane.

Levels of this protein appear to fluctuate according to circadian rhythms (the alternation between day and night).

By studying the concentration of a protein called KLF15, previously linked to several heart diseases, the researchers found that, in the heart tissue of mice, its concentration fluctuates, reaching positive and negative peaks over a 24-hour period. .

KLF15 levels should be high at the transition between day and night, and then in the early morning. But in mice facing sudden cardiac death, they are very low.

This protein would affect the functioning of the ion channels and would be the key to the regular performance of the electrical activity of the heart.

Fluctuating concentrations of this protein also occur in human muscle tissue, and people with heart failure have low levels of KLF15.

The discovery could one day lead to the identification of drugs capable of interfering with this protein and replacing the defibrillator.
