Shakira to prison, the court rejects the complaint on the issue of tax evasion
Shakira and Pique

World-famous Colombian singer Shakira risks ending up in prison. The Spanish court dismissed her appeal in a fiscal fraud case, ruling that there was enough evidence to move the case forward.

In 2012-2014 the singer owes the Spanish state 16.4 million euros in taxes, but the couple's representatives claim that during this period Shakira and Pique were still citizens in the Bahamas and paid taxes there until they finally settled in Spain.

Spanish law states that if an individual spends more than 183 days in the country, he or she is considered a lawful resident and liable to pay taxes on income earned internationally. However, those who spend less than 183 days in Spain will only be responsible for income earned within the country.

The Spanish court has decided today to uphold a decision of July 2021, when Spanish judge Marco Juberías determined that there was "sufficient evidence of criminality" after an investigation that lasted for three years.

According to the court, it was established that the music star was an "ordinary resident of Spain" and there was not enough evidence to show that she lived elsewhere.

Shakira's representatives have stated that she paid the debt after the country's tax agency told her what she owed.

If found guilty of tax evasion, she could be ordered to pay a fine and sentenced to prison, noting that as a first-time offender, the singer could avoid jail time as long as her sentence is less. than two years.
