Why is sea water salty?

Initially, sea water was as sweet as that of rivers, writes the Italian scientific magazine Focus.

The current concentration of salt (about 35 grams per kilogram of water) dates back "only" to a billion years ago.

How was it formed?

We must go further in time. It was then, four billion years ago, that the Earth began to cool. Streams and torrents have scoured the planet for thousands of years, and the water has been deposited in pits in the earth's crust, forming the first seas.

The waters that in the meantime continued to flow on the surface of the continents, were gradually enriched with mineral salts taken from the earth and poured into the forming oceans.

The salinity of the seas also varies with their depth and is significantly higher towards the surface, where there is strong evaporation.

On the other hand, it is scarcer in those seas where the supply of fresh water is more stable, for example near an estuary.
