NASA shows rocket that will take man back to moon

U.S. Space Agency NASA has unfurled for the first time the new giant rocket that will take man to the Moon for the second time.

The ship, known as the Space Launch System (SLS), was sent to Pad 39B at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida for the latest tests. If all goes well, the rocket will be declared ready for a mission on which it will send a crewless test capsule around the Moon. That could happen in the next two months.

Ultimately, it is hoped that astronauts will ascend to later SLS missiles to return to the Moon's surface sometime in the second half of this decade.

These missions are part of what Nasa calls its Artemis program. NASA head Bill Nelson said we were entering a golden age of space exploration on the part of humanity.

"The Artemis generation is preparing to reach new borders", he said.

"This generation will return astronauts to the Moon and this time, we will land the first woman and the first person of color on the surface to perform scientific work. NASA's Artemis program will pave the way for humanity's giant step (for) future missions to Mars," Nelson added.

The SLS is 100 meters high and is designed much more powerful than the Apollo Saturn vehicles of the late 1960s and early 1970s.

The rocket will have the impetus not only to send astronauts much further beyond Earth, but also so much additional equipment and cargo that it can enable long-period support for crew in space.
