If you spend a long time watching videos on TikTok, and at the end of the day the only thing you have gained is eye strain, there is already another option.
TikTok has announced that it will also pay those who simply watch videos on the Chinese app. But don't get excited prematurely, the maximum you can earn is 30 cents a day!
"You will be able to participate in various exciting activities that will allow you to accumulate points, which can then be exchanged for rewards," the company explained.
It is about the application called TikTok Lite.
Lite is a copy of TikTok, a simplified version that consumes less data. The app is already available in Japan and South Korea as of 2023, and has now been launched in France and Spain.
The mechanism of collecting points is quite simple. The user must stay in the application, as well as interact with other profiles, i.e. make "followers", "likes" and others.
But there are also bonuses for those who follow certain pages. The maximum you can earn is 3600 coins per day, approximately 0.36 cents. They can be converted into gift cards via PayPal, Amazon coupons or currency to spend on TikTok.
Beyond the small benefit, the method raises many questions. First of all, as experts say, nothing is free. And often behind these reward mechanisms is a trick to collect user data.
Not only that, forced consistency in the app risks feeding the "rabbit hole" effect, that addiction mechanism caused or encouraged by the algorithms that govern social media.
A mechanism that violates the obligations under the European regulation "regarding the assessment and mitigation of systemic risks, in terms of real or foreseeable negative effects arising from the design of the TikTok system, including algorithmic systems, which may stimulate addiction behavior or thus create the so-called 'rabbit hole effect'".
And in fact, the EU Commission has already launched a preliminary investigation into the case. Therefore, the launch of TikTok Lite in two EU countries has raised alarm among technology experts.
