A doctor has discovered the No. 1 problem that can make you age faster is poor quality sleep.
Dr. Neil Paulvin, a regenerative medicine physician, explained the importance of sleep in an article for CNBC.
A good night's rest is essential for those hoping to age better (and more slowly), he stressed.
Sleep is essential to health, according to the National Sleep Foundation. The foundation found that almost 7 in 10 people who reported poor sleep experienced mild or higher levels of depressive symptoms.
Genetic factors and lifestyle choices, such as smoking, diet and alcohol consumption, can also affect aging, but Paulvin said poor sleep “is the No. 1 mistake. 1 that will make you age faster”.
Why is sleep so important?
The body heals and works to maintain physical health during sleep, according to America's National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.
Over time, poor sleep can promote chronic health problems and affect the heart, metabolism and immune system.
Lack of sleep can cause wrinkles and premature skin aging, Paulvin said, adding that it can also pose serious risks, such as a higher risk of developing dementia.
He recommends that maintaining a consistent sleep schedule, exposure to sunlight after waking up and limiting caffeine can improve a night's sleep.
