There's a new Chinese app that's gaining huge popularity as Americans prepare for their government's blocking of TikTok.

In case you haven't heard, the US government could ban TikTok in the coming days, meaning millions of Americans are at risk of losing access to the social network. Albania has warned it will do the same.

Called RedNote in the US, Xiaohongshu (which translates to Little Red Book) is a social media app that allows users to share photos and videos from their daily lives. The platform is owned by Shanghai-based company Xingyin Information Technology.

Users can also use the app to shop online and share product reviews, meaning it's a mix of social media and e-commerce.

The app, which is often compared to Instagram, TikTok and even Pinterest, is relatively unknown in the West but one of the largest social media sites in China, with around 300 million monthly users. According to a report by Newsweek, the app is said to be worth over $3 billion.

A figure that is now set to increase if "TikTok refugees" decide to make the platform their new home.

Xiaohongshu is currently the most downloaded app in the Apple and Google Play app stores, meaning that a significant portion of TikTok users appear to be willing to try the platform.

One of the concerns raised by the US government seeking to shut down or sell TikTok is precisely its Chinese ownership and suspicions that the company "ByteDance" shares the data of millions of users with the Chinese government.

"The Chinese government could turn TikTok into a weapon at any moment," a US government spokesman said during the hearing on TikTok's closure in the US Supreme Court.

In this context, moving away from one Chinese app for another Chinese app remains equally concerning.
