For decades they lived next to a real treasure. Every day, in the kitchen where they often did the calculations for the family budget, hundreds of gold coins were just a few centimeters below them.

Fate rewarded them. Exactly that kitchen of an anonymous house in Yorkshire, in Great Britain, in 2019 was in a critical condition, in urgent need of reconstruction.

Work on the foundations almost immediately revealed details of a clay cistern containing 264 gold coins, some of them four centuries old. The most recent ones were from 1727, and researchers consulted later think that's the date they were buried, for reasons unknown.

It is certainly known who hid them, the first owners of the building, Joseph Fernley and his wife Sarah, who, according to historians, were large merchants of the area, mainly in iron and coal.

The discovery of 2019 immediately seemed significant, and attracted the attention of collectors from all over the world, because such a quantity of coins is not easy to sell privately.

A few days ago, the anonymous owners of the house sold the treasure at auction for about 850 thousand euros, changing their lives.
