Habit May Musk, mother of the richest man in the world: I slept on friends'

Even though Elon Musk is the richest man in the world, he doesn't even own a home of his own, preferring to spend nights at friends' homes or in modest, temporary accommodations. Apparently, his mother, 78-year-old May Musk, shares this unusual lifestyle philosophy.

In a recent interview with the New York Post, she revealed that until the age of 60, she slept on her friends' couches because "that's how it feels comfortable," considering she grew up camping in the Kalahari Desert.

"If I have a couch or a mattress on the floor, I'm fine," May told the American newspaper. "To sleep on the floor and have a simple roof over my head — that's a luxury for me."

She also revealed a slightly strange detail: when she visits her son at Starbase in Texas, the city that is the center for the development and launch of rockets by the company SpaceX, she sleeps in no less than a garage.

“It doesn’t bother me at all,” May was honest. She shared this anecdote while promoting her new book, in which, among other things, she describes how, as a single mother, she raised three children, built a successful career, and created a life full of meaning.

“Many people are suffering in this world and feel like there is no way out,” she emphasized. “But they need to focus on one question: ‘How do I get out of this desperate situation?’”

She had to find the answer to that question for herself when she was 30. After years of marriage to Elon's father, Errol — whom she describes in the book as "physically and emotionally abusive" — filed for divorce. She began struggling alone to support herself and her three children: Ilona, Kimball, and Tosca. By the way, Errol Musk has consistently denied all allegations of abuse.

The best years come later.

“As a single mother living in South Africa and later in Toronto, I worked several jobs at the same time: from private nutritionist to model. All this just to feed the family,” the 78-year-old recalled. “A person can survive without going out to restaurants, without going to the cinema and without expensive things, as long as there is no mean person next to them who constantly shouts at them.”

In her fifties, May moved to New York to take modeling more seriously. Now, on the cusp of her eighties, she has no intention of giving up. Her career as a model, nutritionist, motivational speaker, and influencer is at its peak.
