"Weddings, births, losses..." - The lives of four families of KLA

The decision of the Hague Special Court to sentence 4 former leaders of the Kosovo Liberation Army to prison has affected every Albanian around the world.

But after six years of detention in The Hague, today the story of Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Rexhep Selim and Jakup Krasniqi is not just that of a court process.

It is also the story of four families who have continued their lives, grown up, married, become parents and grandparents with an empty seat at the table....

Hashim Thaci

Hashim Thaçi and his wife Lumnije have a son, Endrit. Endrit said that he was only 21 years old when his father went to The Hague and that, since then, he has had to take on some of the family's responsibilities.

Haxhi Thaçi, Hashim's father, died at the age of 87, and Hashim was not allowed to attend the funeral.

Kadri Veseli

Kadri Veseli and his wife Violeta have four children, three sons and a daughter. When he was sent to The Hague in 2020, they were still minors, while today they are young adults.

For this family, the years in The Hague brought other losses. Veseli lost both of his parents during his time in detention and received special permission to accompany them to their funerals.

Rexhep Selimi

Rexhep Selimi and his wife Shqipe have two children, Ares and Ersa, who are now 19 and 16 years old. Shqipe is not simply the wife of a former KLA commander. She herself was part of the war.

Jakup Krasniqi

Perhaps the most unusual family story is that of Jakup Krasniqi. He has four children and during his years in detention has become a grandfather four times.

Krasniqi himself has said that he has experienced the births of his grandchildren, engagements and marriages of his children from afar.

In 2022, his son Altini got married while Jakupi was in The Hague. The family attended the ceremony with their father present only via technology.

A year later, his daughter Gresa went to the detention facility to receive her father's blessing for marriage.
