The United States has issued a health alert regarding dog tick bites.
The disease comes from Mexico and the government has called on citizens to take care of their health, especially from the north of the country where this bacterium was discovered.
Its name is Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (RMSF) and its symptoms are fever, headache and rash. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), if not treated in the early stages, it can be fatal.
Specifically, it was discovered in Tecate, Baja California, however, the CDC has urged people who develop symptoms during travel, or two weeks later, to seek medical attention. Symptoms are mostly detected four to ten days after the bite, foreign media reports.
Dogs are common carriers and enable rapid transmission, so be careful not to let them around other dogs as they can catch the disease. It has been discovered mainly in urban areas in the northern states of Mexico, such as Sonora, Coahuila, Nuevo Leon and Chihuahua.
