The divorce of the century that cost 566 million euros

One of the most sensational divorce proceedings in South Korean history has taken a new turn, after a court ruled that SK Group chairman Chae Tae-won must pay his ex-wife, Roh So-yong, 944 billion won (about $644 million) as part of a property division.

However, the case is not yet over, as the decision has not become final and may be subject to further legal proceedings. The amount set is lower than the 2024 ruling, when the court ordered Chae to pay 1.38 trillion won.

Chae Tae-won and Roh So-yong, the daughter of former South Korean President Roh Tae-woo, were married for 35 years. Their marriage was rocked more than a decade ago after the businessman admitted to having a child with another woman, ultimately leading to the couple's separation.

Following the latest ruling, lawyers for the head of SK Group stated that their client "deeply regrets that the divorce proceedings have caused distress to so many people" and that he will provide a more detailed response after reviewing the court's full reasoning.

At the heart of the dispute has been the division of joint assets. In the initial 2024 ruling, Roh's side argued that Chae's business rise was significantly aided by financial support from her father, Roh Tae-woo, who led South Korea from 1988 to 1993.

The court had estimated that the former president had transferred about 30 billion won from a secret political fund to Chae in 1991, deeming it a significant element in the couple's wealth creation. However, the Supreme Court overturned that ruling, arguing that the funds were obtained illegally and could not be included in the calculation of joint property.

Meanwhile, SK Group remains one of the most powerful conglomerates in South Korea. The group, the country's second-largest after Samsung, has seen tremendous growth thanks to investments in technology and artificial intelligence. Its semiconductor arm, SK Hynix, has become a leading supplier of high-performance memory chips for artificial intelligence processors, capitalizing on growing global demand for advanced technology.

The company's success has also strengthened Chae Tae-won's position in the business world. Just a few weeks ago, he received public congratulations from South Korean President Lee Jae-myung for his contribution to strategic investments in the field of artificial intelligence.
