Online shopping during business hours, why is it considered a good thing?

On the days we choose to cruise, we've proven to be prone to online shopping. Researchers say we end up browsing everything from toothpaste to concert tickets while nodding off on a Zoom group video call and typing in our card details between e-mails to our boss.

Of course filling the bins for 8 hours is bad, but if it is done for a few minutes while taking a short break, it certainly won't hurt productivity, on the contrary.

With no one above us, we can break up the monotony of another day's work with the pleasure of buying a new pair of shoes… even if we might regret it sometimes.

New research from Stanford University reveals that the pandemic caused an "explosion" of online shopping that continues. Last year, for example, American consumers spent a total of $375 billion more.

Most of this growth is due to people working hybrid or remote jobs. The data shows that in areas where residents work from home, online shopping has increased, while it has returned to pre-pandemic levels in areas where most people work for a living.

Along with walking the dog and eating a quick meal, shopping while we work is a way to use our time efficiently.

Weekly online spending peaks from 10am. to 1:00 p.m., on Fridays as the work week draws to a close. More than a quarter of women surveyed last year by Rakuten said they usually shop online during work hours. For Generation Z, the figure is 41%.

Marketers are also increasing their investments in technology and filling their websites with more products. Algorithm-based recommendations become so personal that you can feel like they know your wishes before you say them.
