A new study, recently published, has drawn some conclusions about the background and medical history of the greatest German composer of classical music, Ludwig van Beethoven.

Genomic analysis saw the DNA of eight strands of hair attributed to the legendary composer.

Scientists have discovered, among other things, that Beethoven had a genetic predisposition to liver disease as well as a hepatitis B infection that damaged his liver in the months before his death.

"These factors, along with Beethoven's regular drinking, present plausible explanations for his death in 1827," the authors of the study said in the journal Current Biology.

Of the eight strands of hair studied, one of them was an important historical fact, known as "Hiller's Block", which had been previously studied and became the subject of a documentary and bestseller.

Hair studies had suggested Beethoven may have died of lead poisoning.

However, in this most recent analysis, research revealed that the hair did not belong to Beethoven, but to a woman of Ashkenazi Jewish descent.

"It is believed that Ludvig van Beethoven's grandmother may have had an extramarital affair, which led to the birth of his father," says Maarten Larmuseau, a co-author of the study and a professor of genetic genealogy at Belgium's University of Leuven.
