Often when we think of alien life, our imagination thinks of them as "green people."

But maybe we should start changing the way we think about them, because they can have a completely different color: They can be violet.

This conclusion is reached after reading the study published in the International Journal of Astrobiology by microbiologist Shiladitya DasSarma of the University of Maryland School of Medicine, which supports the idea that ancient life on Earth may have a different color tone than the planets others may have flourished.

He actually supports the idea that before green plants began to spread on Earth, small pink organisms were their ancestors on the earth's surface.

For this reason, the possibility is not ruled out that on other planets these types of living microorganisms have spread and colonized entire alien worlds, without being dominated by green plants.

To understand why DasSarma tossed out this idea, it must be remembered that the hypothesis that the Earth was a violet dates back to 2007. The idea starts from this concept: plants and photosynthetic algae use chlorophyll to absorb sunlight but do not absorb green light that reflect it. And this is quite strange why green light is full of energy.

And it is hypothesized that before the advent of green plants, there were others that used the same wavelength to produce energy for their own organisms. These organisms may have used solar energy with a molecule called a "retina."

Retinal pigments absorb green light much better compared to other energy waves. It is true that they are not very efficient at capturing solar energy like chlorophyll, but they are much simpler organisms. And for this it is hypothesized that they may have evolved before plants.

Yet the collection of retinal light is still scattered today in bacteria and single-celled organisms called Archea.

In fact violet organisms are present in different parts of our planet, from the arid valleys of Antarctica to various areas of the oceans.

Despite the fact that the Earth may have been a viola in the beginning, biologists think that these types of organisms may have adapted to distant worlds to produce energy this way.
