Migratory birds have invaded the fields of Eastern Hungary this year.

Due to the unusually warm weather this fall, an estimated 194,000 migratory birds are staying in these shallow marshes and seem to have no intention of leaving this environment.

Hortobagy National Park in Hungary is one of the favorite areas for migratory birds, who stop here on their flight from northern Europe to Africa, to feed and gather strength before their long journey.

This autumn, they are overpopulated and according to Attila Szilagyi, the guard of this park, says that due to the warm temperatures above 20 degrees Celsius, the ideal environment is being created for them.

" Migratory birds are spending more time here than ever before. The previous record was in 2018 when the birds that stayed here was 160,000, while this year the number is greater as we counted 194,000 birds.”

It explains the reasons why migratory birds are choosing to stay longer in this area.

"We have had very favorable circumstances that have caused so many birds to spend time here. The weather has been very good, so as late summer, there has been plenty of corn in the agricultural fields, which has been harvested and migratory birds can gather and eat. On the other hand, there has been another very positive phenomenon, as we have had winds blowing from the south, so the migratory birds have not felt the need to start their journey to the south, as they have had a safe area for fed here, but also with quite favorable weather conditions.”

For Attila Szilagyi this situation is unusual.

"The normal migration cycle of migratory birds lasts from mid-September to the end of October. It is now November and the migratory birds are here in great numbers.”

For the park ranger, this situation is a consequence of climate change.

"This situation is undoubtedly due to the effects of climate change. And an additional effect is that migratory birds are now using Hungary's plains to roost during the winter. They are also staying down on the southern border, along Serbia, Vojvodina, Szeged, it is not rare that we see groups of migratory birds that spend the winter there."

The number of migratory birds staying in the Hortobagy National Park area has increased since the 1980s. They live in large undisturbed ponds and shallow marshes. After sunrise they head out to feed in the nearby corn fields where they can find enough food after the corn harvest.

In the late afternoon, they return to the marsh to rest for the night and socialize with each other, as this is also the time when young migratory birds learn important skills and behaviors throughout their lives.

About 5 million migratory birds migrate every year from Europe and Asia, mainly to Africa. Many species of birds migrate along the same routes, following physical features such as coastlines, mountain ranges and river valleys.

The most common reason to migrate for a particular season is to take advantage of food, shelter and water that can change with the seasons.
