After Vulin's resignation, the American embassy reacts: We do not interfere

The American Embassy in Serbia has told Radio Free Europe that the United States has no role in the decisions of the authorities in Serbia, while commenting on the resignation of the director of the Serbian Security and Information Agency (BIA), Aleksandar Vulin.

"Our position on Vulini is known. He is under American sanctions", said a spokesperson of the embassy in the request of the Balkan Service of Radio Free Europe to comment on Vulini's resignation.

The embassy has said that the US intends to deepen its partnership with Serbia, with the aim of European and Euro-Atlantic integration.

Vulin has resigned from the position of head of the intelligence agency of Serbia, on November 3.

"I am handing in my irrevocable resignation from the position of BIA director," Vulin said on November 3, who has been on the US sanctions list since July of this year, due to suspicions of corruption and involvement in drug trafficking. drugs, as well as for ties with Russia.

"The USA and the EU are asking for my head as a precondition for not imposing sanctions on Serbia. I am not the cause of blackmail and pressure on Serbia and the Serbian world, but I will not allow myself to be the cause of blackmail and pressure on Serbia and the Serbian world. Therefore, I submit my irrevocable resignation from the post of BIA director", said Vulin.

The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, has said that there has been pressure since Vulin was appointed to that position.

"He knows very well how he moves and what consequences it can have. I cannot comment on all the things for the simple reason that I am obliged not to talk about these things", Vucic told Pink Television on November 3, adding that he understands Vulini's reaction.

Among other things, Vucic said that Vulin is not an agent of anyone, including Russia.

He told Pink Television that he wants to thank Vulini "for the contribution he has made to the preservation of our state, to make it stable and independent".

In the last decade, Vulin has held several political positions, including that of the head of the Office for Kosovo in the Government of Serbia, as well as in the departments of defense and internal affairs.

He has maintained close ties with Russian officials even after the start of Russia's war in Ukraine in February 2022.

Although Serbia is a candidate for EU membership, it has not joined the sanctions of the European bloc against Russia, for the war launched against Ukraine.

Daniel Sever, a professor at Johns Hopkins University, has told the Balkan Service of Radio Free Europe that Vulini's resignation from the position of the head of the BIA does not mean a distancing of Serbia's policy towards Russia, but an attempt to avoid additional sanctions.

According to him, Washington will welcome Vulin's resignation, while Moscow will not be happy.

Asked why Vulini resigned, Server said that he was under pressure from Europeans and Americans.

"Well, the fact that it took three months, and not three days, shows that there was great resistance from the president of Serbia, Vucic, who has the same view as Vulini and the same ambition for political control of the Serbian population in neighboring countries.

He even said that he believes that Vulin told the truth, when he said that the USA and the EU asked for his resignation, so that they would not impose sanctions on Serbia.

However, he does not believe that his resignation means that Serbia will agree to other concessions.

"Vulini is not the only problem in Serbia, or in its intelligence services. "President Vucic has not shown any sign of regret for the events of September 24 in the north of Kosovo," said Server.

He was also asked about the possible new demands towards Serbia.

"On September 24, Serbia tried to commit rebellion in Kosovo, in order to create the conditions for the intervention of the Serbian army. In my opinion, Serbia should take responsibility for these developments, apologize and promise that something like this will never happen again in the future. It should hand over the organizers to the Kosovo authorities for trial. Serbia has also opposed the agreements for normalization with Kosovo, of February and March. Washington and Brussels should ask Vucic to sign them, but of course, he won't do anything like that before the December elections. Maybe not even after them."

Serbia has announced parliamentary and local elections for December 17./REL
