At least 128 people were killed and dozens injured in a powerful earthquake that struck western Nepal's Jajarkot region on Friday, officials said today, as several buildings in the region collapsed and tremors were also felt in neighboring New Delhi, India.

The earthquake occurred at 23:47 (local time, 19:02 our time) yesterday with a magnitude of 6.4, according to the National Seismological Center of Nepal. The German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ) estimated the earthquake's magnitude at 5.7 degrees, revising it from the 6.2 degrees it had previously reported. According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake had a magnitude of 5.6.

Officials fear the death toll could rise as communication has not been possible with the mountainous region near the epicenter, about 500 km west of the capital Kathmandu, where the tremors were also felt. The region has a population of 190,000 with villages scattered in remote hills.

"The number of injured could be in the hundreds and the death toll could also rise," Haris Chandra Sharma, an official in Jajarkot district, told Reuters by phone.

"Many houses have collapsed, many others have cracks. "Thousands of residents spent the night in the cold because they were too afraid to enter their homes because of the continuing tremors," he said.

Search and rescue teams have to clear roads closed by landslides caused by the earthquake to reach the affected areas, said police officer Namaraj Bhattarai. In 2015, around 9,000 people lost their lives in two earthquakes in this Himalayan country. Entire cities were subsequently flattened while over a million homes were destroyed, at a cost of $6 billion in economic damage.
