Authorities in Hong Kong managed to uncover the largest case of cryptocurrency fraud involving 1,641 investors with funds of 1.2 billion dollars. After the investigations, 8 people were arrested for fraud with the JPEX platform, while bank accounts with 15 million dollars were frozen.
A few days ago, the Hong Kong Securities Commission issued a public warning against using JPEX as an unregulated cryptocurrency platform that in turn claims to operate according to local rules.
Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee said regulators will "monitor the situation closely and ensure that investors are protected." Hong Kong is regulating the volatile cryptocurrency sector through a mandatory licensing regime for centralized exchanges as it seeks to safely develop the industry by becoming a global hub.
