Pope Francis' will revealed, he requested a modest tomb with a single inscription on the stone

In his will, written in 2022, Pope Francis gave instructions for what should happen after his death. He requested to be buried in Santa Maria Maggiore, in the tomb located on the side of the nave, between the Paolini Chapel (Chapel of Salus Populi Romani) and the Sforza Chapel.

“The tomb should be in the ground; simple, without special decorations and with a single inscription: Franciscus. The expenses for the preparation of my burial will be covered by the sum given by a benefactor, which I have ordered to be transferred to the Papal Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore and for which I have given the appropriate instructions to Monsignor Rolandas Makrickas, Extraordinary Commissioner of the Liberian Chapter.”

The text concludes: "May God grant the deserved reward to those who have loved me and who will continue to pray for me. The suffering that has accompanied me in the last part of my life I have offered to God for peace in the world and for brotherhood among peoples."
