"Hole" in Europe's shield, where Russian drones penetrate

An incident with a Russian drone has brought the weakness of Moldova's air defenses back into the spotlight and the danger it poses to Europe's eastern flank.

A drone launched from Crimea entered Moldovan airspace, flew over the capital Chisinau and then headed towards Romania, a NATO member country.

According to the report, Spanish NATO fighter jets took off from the Constanta base to intercept it, but the drone changed direction before it was captured.

The incident took on special significance as it occurred at a time when Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was expected to arrive in Chisinau. The plane carrying Zelensky was forced to remain on the runway until the alert was over.

The Kremlin denied that the Ukrainian president was in danger. The Ukrainian side also did not confirm that there was a concrete threat to Zelensky.

Moldova, the weak point of air defense

The incident highlights the problem of Moldova's limited military capabilities. The country is not a member of NATO or the European Union, while its constitution stipulates a status of neutrality.

Moldova has a relatively small armed force and limited air defense capabilities. The country reportedly has only one modern radar purchased with financial support from the European Union, which can detect air targets but not neutralize them.

This makes Moldovan airspace one of the most exposed segments of the eastern European border.

The EU has given millions for protection

Brussels has increased financial support for the modernization of the Moldovan armed forces. According to data cited in the report, in July 120 million euros were made available for improving air defense, bringing the total support for military modernization to about 317 million euros.

However, the modernization is not complete. Moldova has not yet finalized contracts for the purchase of French Mistral air defense systems.

Russian drones, a growing threat

According to the report, it is a new generation of Russian drones, faster and more powerful than traditional propeller-driven models.

These vehicles can fly at high speeds and use autonomous systems, including artificial intelligence technology and electronic countermeasures equipment.

For NATO countries bordering Ukraine, the threat has been taken increasingly seriously. Romania has used fighter jets to monitor and, in some cases, shoot down drones that have entered its airspace.

Poland, meanwhile, has strengthened security measures along the border with Ukraine and imposed temporary flight restrictions in areas where drones may appear.

Transnistria, another point of tension

Moldova's problem is not just about air defense. In the east of the country is Transnistria, a separatist territory supported and militarily present by Russia.

The region is located near the border with Ukraine and has long been considered one of the most sensitive security hotspots in Eastern Europe.

Against this backdrop, every air incident takes on greater significance. Moldova is caught between the war in Ukraine, Russian influence, and its process of rapprochement with the European Union.

The recent incident with the Russian drone has thus raised a worrying question for European security: how protected is the airspace on the border between the war in Ukraine and NATO territory?
