The European Union has reacted to recent developments and the decision that will be given in 4 days for Hashim Thaçi and other former KLA leaders at the Specialist Chambers in The Hague.

In a reaction to Gazeta Express, the EU has called on the states involved and the parties to the case to show restraint and respect the court's decision.

The European Union has demanded respect for the decision to be taken against the four defendants in The Hague, Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Jakup Krasniqi and Rexhep Selimi .

"On the eve of the announcement of the first instance verdict in the case of the Specialist Prosecutor against Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Rexhep Selim and Jakup Krasniqi , we call on all states and parties to respect the judicial proceedings of the Kosovo Specialist Chambers and the decision," they say from Brussels.

The EU emphasized its long-standing support for the Kosovo Specialist Chambers (KSCC) as “ an independent judicial institution ”, while recalling that it was “ established by decisions of the Kosovo Assembly in 2014–2015 ”.

“The Parliament of Kosovo (through a constitutional amendment) authorized the relocation of proceedings to The Hague, to help guarantee independent, impartial and fair judicial proceedings regarding allegations of serious crimes committed during and after the conflict in Kosovo.”

But the EU points out that the September 16 decision is not the end of the judicial process and that it can be appealed by both sides.

"As in all other judicial procedures, first-instance verdicts can be appealed by both the defense and the prosecution."

Finally, the European Union says that, “ the work of the Kosovo Specialist Chambers is important for promoting accountability and recognizing the experiences of victims and their families from all communities in Kosovo .”

A peaceful march in defense of the four former KLA leaders will begin in Pristina today at 2:00 PM , with citizens from all over Kosovo expected to attend. Their demand is justice for Thaçi, Veseli, Krasniqi and Selimi.

Meanwhile, the entire trial in The Hague has been accompanied by criticism from Kosovo of the work of the Special Court, calling it biased.

The indictment of the Specialized Prosecutor contains 10 counts against the four, six of which are for crimes against humanity and four for war crimes. Earlier this year, the SSP had requested 45 years in prison for the defendants.

The Specialist Chamber was formed in 2015, and began operating in 2016-2017 following the Kosovo-EU exchange of letters, constitutional amendments, and the agreement with the Netherlands to relocate the Specialist Chambers there.
