The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has said that we must work on the next steps to reach a point where the member states of the European Union agree to lift the measures against Kosovo.

In a media conference on Saturday in Pristina with President Vjosa Osmani, Von der Leyen added that together with the leaders of Kosovo, they are committed to achieving these goals.

He assessed the opening of Merdar for the transit of Serbian goods as a positive step.

"It is very important to work together, and we have welcomed the opening of the border and the progress in CEFTA and after that we need to work on further steps to get to a point where the measures can be lifted and this will help to convince the states member states - as you know, all member states must agree on the lifting of the measures. Both of us (Von der Leyen & Osmani) are committed to finding the necessary steps to achieve these goals. It is important to see Kosovo as our partner and make Kosovo's path towards the EU possible", she said.

Kosovo has been under EU measures since June of last year following the unrest in the north with Albanian leaders - for which internationals blamed the Kurti Government for not taking steps to defuse the situation.

At the conference, Von der Leyen emphasized that enlargement will be at the top of the agenda in his second term as president of the EC and that he is committed to providing the countries of the Western Balkans with all the necessary tools for EU membership. .

"I know that in recent years, Kosovo has worked hard to strengthen democracy and the rule of law, and I want to assure you and Kosovo that in my second mandate, expansion will be at the top of the agenda. For me it is one of the biggest projects. For this reason, we will work together to move forward because I am committed to a future where all the countries of the Western Balkans have all the necessary tools and instruments to make this a reality", she declared.

The President of the EC praised the work that Kosovo has done for the Growth Plan.

"I want to emphasize the Growth Plan. The Growth Plan is planned to bring the region's economies closer to the common market. The great success of enlargement is not only political agreements and shared values, but also economic prosperity. We have already opened the sectors of the common market for the partners of the Western Balkans, so that companies from Kosovo, for example, can have access to the common market. For this reason, we need reforms to have an equal level of participation. These reforms will be accompanied by additional European investments. It has been a year since we started this discussion, most of the countries have the Reform Agenda ready. Kosovo has done excellent work on this agenda. Now we can start with the pre-financing of more than 60 million euros. It is a project where we look at Kosovo and relations with the EU. It depends on us to make it a reality", she said.

Von der Leyen also spoke about the refusal to meet Milos Vučević on Friday in Belgrade after the Serbian prime minister met the Russian minister beforehand. But he did not give any concrete answer.

"The president of Serbia welcomed me to the meeting, and in front of me was the prime minister of Poland and Greece, instead of going to Kazan. This was a clear message", she concluded./Koha.net
