An apartment block in China was turned into a giant fridge after a tenant allegedly forgot to lock the door in a week when the province recorded its lowest temperature ever.

Shocking footage showed residents in winter clothing in the 'snow cave' that had formed near the entrance to the corridor of the building in Jiamusi City, Heilongjiang Province on Friday, January 24.

Large chunks of ice hung from the door frame and ceiling as strong winds blew the snow through the doorway and covered the inside of the hall.

Residents were stunned by the situation created as the temperatures went to -40 degrees Celsius.

A cold front has hit much of Asia, affecting China, Japan and Korea.

On Sunday, just two days after the apartment 'snow cave' formed, a town on the northernmost tip of Heilongjiang recorded a temperature of -53C, the lowest since records began.

China's national meteorological agency last week urged citizens to keep warm as cold weather could threaten residents across central, northern and eastern parts of the country.

The cold weather hit many areas unaccustomed to such severe conditions, where residents usually experience much milder climates.

But the northern Chinese city of Mohe - known as 'China's North Pole' - recorded three consecutive days of temperatures below -50C, which Chinese media said was unprecedented.
