Several players of the Burundi national handball team who disappeared a month ago in Croatia have applied for asylum in Belgium.

According to the Belgian Secretary of State for Asylum and Migration, Nicole de Moor, some of the young athletes who went missing on August 9 in Rijeka, Croatia, have already submitted their asylum claims to Belgium, the former colonial power of Burundi and the country which has a large community of Burundian nationals.

Although the Secretary of State did not specify the number of asylum applicants from this group, Belgian press agencies have revealed that it is "a large part of the team".

Last month, Croatian police announced that they were aware of the case and had launched a search for the fate of the players.

"The police received the notification about the absence of Burundian citizens who were participating in the world championship for young people.

On Wednesday around 15:30 they left in an unknown direction. "Measures and actions are being taken to find the missing handball players and ascertain all relevant facts and circumstances of their disappearance," the statement of the Croatian police said.
