Germany offered Ukraine the air defense system, Iris-T SLM, proven to be very effective. Its success in Ukraine made this system highly sought after by many European countries.
In the Baltic Sea is the location of the Bundeswehr, Todendorf, where the military anti-aircraft missile department No. 61 is stationed. A classic military terrain, but within a few months a container complex has been erected there. The Bundeswehr and German industry have jointly set up an air defense training center in record time. The head of the training center, Ingo Gerhartz, speaks of "supersonic" speeds, compared to the procedures usually known by the German army.
This was apparently made possible by the industry's cooperation with the Bundeswehr, a cooperation which Ingo Gerhartz praises. Cooperation with the family-run enterprise Diehl Defense led to the acceleration of the production of air defense systems.
For German army inspector Gerhartz, this is a "turning point". In June 2023, the contract was signed, in October 2024, the first anti-aircraft system is expected to be in service of the army. German systems could become an important European air defense base in Europe.
Two German air defense systems are in continuous use in Ukraine, a third will be given to this country by Germany in the fall. In the space around Kiev, anti-aircraft missiles "made in Germany" protect citizens and critical infrastructure from Russian "shahed" drones. More than 110 hits have been recorded by the German system, says Harald Buschek, executive director of Diehl Defence. In the spring of this year, this system simultaneously neutralized a massive attack with 13 Russian drones. The German anti-aircraft system is being tested under the most difficult circumstances. If they have problems, the Ukrainians call the manufacturer Diehl Defense.
The success of the German air system in Ukraine has made it highly sought after in other countries as well. For Diehl Defence, this means a billion-dollar business, although no figures are officially mentioned. The production of the air defense system has increased, next year the factories will produce up to 500 anti-aircraft missiles, and by 2025 eight complex air defense systems.
The Iris-T-SLM looks set to become a German export hit. And it is no wonder that within a short time on the eastern German shores of the Baltic, the German army together with the industry have set up halls, educational spaces, special training centers in record time.
"European Air Defense Academy" becomes a reality
According to the German position, the Iris-T SLM system will have to become an important part of the European air defense. The German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz announced in his speech in Prague a year ago that the "European Sky Shield" initiative will be established and with the "European Air Defense Academy" training center it will become a reality. According to the inspector of the German army, Gerhartz, the Iris T-SLM system should be available to as many countries as possible. Meanwhile, 14 military inspectors from all over Europe have visited the training center near the Baltic and the air defense system. Only France, Germany's most important partner, was absent. French systems are preferred there./ DW
