US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order imposing tariffs of up to 25% on goods from countries that buy oil from Iran.
The order does not directly impose tariffs, but provides the president with the legal basis to implement them starting today, on goods imported into the US from any nation that "purchases, imports, or acquires directly or indirectly any good or service from Iran," A2 CNN reports.
It will be the duty of the Department of Commerce, in consultation with the Department of State, to identify buyers of Iranian oil and make recommendations to the president.
This comes amid ongoing talks between senior American and Iranian officials in Oman, after weeks of threats from both sides.
