Determined to protect the trade route, Britain and the US bomb the Houthi rebels

The United States and Great Britain have launched a series of joint airstrikes targeting Houthi rebels in Yemen.

The Pentagon said on Monday that eight targets had been hit, including an underground site that housed rebel weapons and surveillance equipment.

Backed by Iran, the rebel group has aimed to target commercial ships linked mainly to Israel and the West that pass through the important Red Sea trade route.

The US and Britain say they are trying to protect "this trade route".

A joint statement issued by the Pentagon confirmed an additional round of proportionate and necessary strikes against the rebels. The statement said the attacks were carried out with the support of Australia, Bahrain, Canada and the Netherlands.

UK Defense Secretary Grant Shapps described the strikes as self-defense against the Houthis' intolerable attacks on commercial shipping.
