Sweden is giving away private islands, but not to billionaires

There are many ways to be rich in life. You can be rich in love, surrounded by friends and family. You can be rich in the time you spend however you want – whether it’s meditating in the woods, cooking a feast in the kitchen, or swimming. Or you can simply be rich enough to have your own private island.

Now Visit Sweden is offering the chance to experience a little bit of both, as the tourism organization is donating five private islands in an effort to "share a Swedish vision of freedom and responsibility in nature," Euronews reports.

“Sweden has more islands than any other country in the world, and we would like to invite people to enjoy what is perhaps the most authentic form of luxury: the peace and quiet of nature on their own island,” says Susan Anderson, CEO of Visit Sweden.

“Your Swedish island” – right?

Before you start planning how you will turn your private island into a resort or launch any other profitable scheme, there are some limitations.

Although it would be “Your Swedish Island,” as the campaign title suggests, you won’t actually own it, nor will you be able to name it after yourself. Instead, you will be the official custodian of the island (with a diploma as proof) with the right to use the island for a year.

During that period, you will be able to camp, swim, invite friends, and spend time outdoors, provided you show consideration for the local flora and fauna and the environment.

Since Sweden has a legally guaranteed right to public access to nature, other people will also be able to visit or pass through your island during this time.

How to conquer a private island

Five private islands are available – Medbadan, Flisan, Storberget, Tjuvholmen and Marsten – and the prize includes a round-trip trip to Sweden for two people.

Unfortunately, this prize does not include transportation to the “surprisingly remote” islands you may be able to use, so winners should be prepared to rent a kayak, board, or boat during their stay.

To enter the competition, you must submit a video explaining why you deserve an island — less than a minute long. You can increase your chances by sharing the video on social media with the hashtag #YourSwedishIsland.

Applications must be submitted before April 17, 2026, and a jury will select the most creative applications and announce the winners in May of this year.

The competition is open to all international travelers over the age of 18 — except billionaires. The reason for this is that Visit Sweden “wants to redefine luxury as simplicity, silence and freedom in nature — not material abundance.”
