Explosion at coal mine kills 51 miners in Iran

At least 51 workers have died in a gas leak at a coal mine in Iran.

20 other workers were injured after the blast in South Khorasan province. The explosion occurred at 9pm local time on Saturday.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian also spoke of his condolences to the victims' families. "The matter is being pursued seriously," Pezeshkian said in a statement to the media.

The Taba mine covers an area of more than 30,000 square kilometres and holds massive reserves of cok and thermal coal. It is considered the richest and largest coal area in Iran.
