For this year's elections in the United States, record numbers were spent, with 150 billionaire families contributing about 1.9 billion dollars in support of presidential and congressional candidates.
According to a new report from Americans for Tax Fairness, 72% of these funds went to Republicans, while only 22% went to Democrats, The Guardian reports.
David Kass, executive director of the ATF, said such campaign spending "stifles the voices and concerns of ordinary Americans."
He emphasized that this situation is a disturbing consequence of the increase in the wealth of billionaires and a clear indication that the system that regulates campaign financing has collapsed.
Kass said it is necessary to curb the political power of billionaires by taxing them better and limiting their campaign donations.
He warned that without these measures, the influence of the super-rich over politics and government will continue to escalate.
