Chinese scientists say they have successfully cloned three "supercows" that can produce an extremely large amount of milk, Chinese media reports.

State-run newspaper Ningxia Daily reported that experts from the Northwest University of Agricultural and Forestry Science and Technology have cloned Holstein-Friesian cattle originating from the Netherlands, SE-EN reports.

These cows can produce 18 tons of milk per year, or 100 tons of milk in their lifetime; which is almost 1.7 times the amount of milk produced by an average cow in the US.

As they say, the cloned animals were born at the beginning of this year. The first of the cloned calves was born on December 30 by caesarean section, due to its relatively large size of 56.7 kilograms.

Scientists cloned 120 embryos from the cells of highly productive cows and placed them into a surrogate cow. The scientist who led the project, Yin Yaping, said the cloning of the "supercows" was a major step forward as it allowed China to breed better breeds "in an economically feasible way".

"Only five out of 10,000 cows in China can produce 100 tons of milk in their lifetime, which makes them a valuable breeding resource. But sometimes it is difficult to determine exactly which animal it is, which makes it difficult to raise them. We plan in two to three years, let's create a herd of more than 1,000 supercows to reduce China's dependence on cow imports,” Yin said.
