The wiretapping scandal in Greece / DW analysis: Will there be changes in the
Parliament of Greece

Will the wiretapping scandal lead to a change of government in Athens? The opposition hopes, but the government has survived so far.

Greece is in the middle of the election campaign, although the date of the parliamentary elections has not yet been set. The legislative term ends in July 2023, but early elections are possible on April 9. Two things are now certain: First, the public will not get any answers to the open questions about the wiretapping scandal, which is spreading more and more. And secondly, the election campaign is likely to turn into a fight between the conservative ruling Nea Dimokratia party and the left-wing Syriza alliance.

This became clear during a three-day debate in the Greek parliament last week. The debate was sparked after a no-confidence motion by opposition leader Alexis Tsipras on Wednesday (25 January 2023). The reason for this is a report by the data protection authority (ADAE) about the wiretapping scandal that has gripped Greece for months.

The agency confirmed that the EYP secret service had tapped Labor Minister Kostas Chatzidakis and five senior military officials, including the Chief of the General Staff of the Greek Armed Forces, Konstantinos Floros. Months ago, it was announced that MEP Nikos Androulakis, leader of the third largest party, PASOK, and two journalists had been tapped.

"Justice will clarify the matter"

Regarding the question why this happened, during the debate, the deputies and the Greek public did not receive an answer from Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. Although he did not deny the wiretapping, he said he knew nothing about it. The judiciary will clarify the case," Mitsotakis said simply. He used the debate to speak at length about the mistakes of the previous government and the scandals Syriza politicians were allegedly involved in during their tenure from 2015 to 2019. He accused Syriza leader Tsipras of launching a “ "dirty" political war in view of the upcoming parliamentary elections.

Skandali i përgjimeve

After that, the scandal continued to spread. Among those intercepted were also members of the command of the armed forces, ministers and journalists. On January 29, 2023, Documento magazine, which has played a central role in publishing the names of suspected wiretapping victims, published an interesting story on its front page: Mitsotakis's sister, Dora Bakogiannis, MP and former - Foreign Minister, her son Kostas Bakogiannis, the mayor of Athens and her daughter Alexia. So far, there has been no denial of the information from the family./DW
